Children who attend summer camp get to experience the 1800 square foot vegetable garden in all it’s summer glory. With a wide variety of fruit and vegetables to pick from depending on the week, our daily cooking classes are vibrant with fresh, colourful and flavourful ingredients to pick from.
The garden is full of the following: rhubarb, strawberries, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, squash, pumpkins, potatoes, herbs, garlic, mixed greens, kale, swiss chard, carrots, beets, green onions. Each day children will have the opportunity to help in the garden with a different lesson each day on caring for different plants.
Daily cooking classes are a favourite activity among the children at camp. Typically we learn to cook between 2-3 different recipes each day, depending on what other activities are planned.
A highlight from last summer was learning how to make homemade yogurt which we sweetened with honey and vanilla. We used a salt and ice method to freeze the yogurt on the back deck during the afternoon water games.
The frozen yogurt was a hit among all campers and was served along with the granola we made and the fresh strawberries we had picked.
Providing opportunities for outdoor play and learning is an essential element of the summer camp. Daily nature crafts provide the excuse for us to take a daily nature walk – we need inspiration and often are searching for fallen plant life that we can incorporate into our craft of the day.
Last summer on a hike into the back woods we stopped along the road side to investigate the water collecting in the ditch. The children were delighted to find tadpoles and had a great time attempting to catch some for observation.
