We had a great time learning all about winter birds at camp last month. Morning craft had us busy making peanut butter whole grain suet for the birds. Later, after our stir fry cooking class, we took a walk into the woods to observe all the birds and animals getting ready for winter.
During our afternoon building class, we made birch wood suet holders. Have I mentioned how nice it is to be married to an arborist? The bird feeders turned out great and now all our campers know how to make a steady supply of suet for their neighbourhood cold weather friends.
Peanut Butter Suet Recipe
2 store-bought suet cakes (can be mixed with seeds)
2 cups lard
1 cup peanut butter
6 cups cornmeal or ground oats
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 1/4 cups bird seed
- Melt oils
- Mix in remaining ingredients
- Pour into silicon baking trays or parchment paper lined pan
- Allow to cool and refrigerate until firm
- Remove from pan and cut to fit your suet holder
I made this wired suet holder using some wire from the good old dollar store. I’ve also seen similar designed holders using vines.
